The Santa Croce District

A part of the hidden Venice that will surprise you, a place where you'll be in touch with the daily Venice far away from the most touristic places of the city.

Santa Croce is a district quite neglected by tourists. Nonetheless, it is an area full of history, art and traditions, from ancient times up to the present day. Starting our tour in Piazzale Roma or at the Railway Station, we notice immediately the green dome of the church dedicated to St. Simon “the Little”. We can then walk up to one of the most ancient churches in town, San Giacomo dell’Orio, and finally discover the precious marble decorations on the façades of the buildings in Campo Santa Maria Mater Domini, one of the most peculiar campi (i.e. little squares) in Venice. From here we can proceed with the visit of very different museums: Ca’ Mocenigo, the house of an ancient Venetian noble family, with its precious collection of 17th century costumes, or the Fontego dei Turchi (the ancient warehouse of the Turkish merchants), where we can admire the rich museum dedicated to Natural Sciences. Maybe you prefer contemporary art? Ca’ Pesaro, with its extraordinary works of art by major artists such as Chagall, Kandinskij, Calder, Klimt, is just a few steps from here.
